Described as “cylindrical whiskers with a metallic luster” by my colleague John Jaszczak—who first discovered merelaniite, named in honor of the miners in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, where the first analyzed specimens were found—the mineral lacks the eye-catching brilliance of the large, colorful gems the workers struggle to uncover in the area’s underground tunnels. Merelaniite does not dazzle like the large, vivid gems they labor to extract, but its beauty is quieter, and more elusive. Only under magnification does it reveal its true nature: layer upon layer of silvery sheets curled into tiny scrolls, a rare architecture hidden within the mineral world. It is a beauty that waits for the patient eye. In imagining this musically, I became fascinated by the notion of “cylinders and whiskers.” Each performer dwells within a private musical cylinder—an individual world—while delicate gestures, fine as filaments, extend outward and dissolve. The music changes slowly, almost imperceptibly, as if shaped by forces deep below the surface. What interests me most is the moment when something understated, almost invisible, finally reveals itself—when listening closely becomes a form of discovery.
