Ardent Quest

"Ardent Quest" evokes the excitement of a mythic quest. Bold rhythmic patterns, a heroic primary theme, and energetic percussion parts set an adventurous tone at the opening. A contrasting, lyrical secondary theme has a mystical quality and features the woodwinds. A call-and-response middle section evokes a stirring clash of characters as percussion and winds duel. Finally, the secondary theme returns but in a sweeping, epic style that takes the piece to a rousing, rhythmic conclusion. Performers should take note of the accents in the opening rhythmic motive and throughout the piece. In the lyric passage at m. 26, clarinets should aim for smooth note changes and dynamic nuance. Directors should be careful to not let the ensemble play too loud at m. 62, allowing plenty of room to grow toward the finale. The sub. p and cresc. to fp at m. 72 should be utilized for maximum drama. Let the tam-tam and crash cymbal ring at the end for a memorable finish.
