Dark Hollow Fantasy

"Dark Hollow Fantasy" is a musical reflection inspired by time spent exploring the Dark Hollow Falls area of Shenandoah National Park. The piece begins cloaked in mystery, capturing the feeling of descending through dense fog into the shadowed forest surrounding the falls. As the journey continues, the music gradually grows in energy and intensity, reflecting the anticipation of approaching the waterfall before finally opening into the grandeur of Dark Hollow Falls itself. Written for young concert band, "Dark Hollow Fantasy" places special emphasis on the ensemble’s low voices. Melodic material is frequently shared with the low brass and low woodwinds, giving these sections a chance to take center stage while encouraging balanced ensemble playing and musical independence throughout the band.
